Nice to meet you! We are Dottie and Lenza, the couple behind Dots on a Map.
If you’re curious about how people eat and cook around the world, and the stories and rituals behind food, you’ve come to the right place. We hope that with us, you will be able to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives via food
- Find food-forward guides and resources that help you explore new destinations
- Get inspired by all the beauty (and deliciousness!) in the world
As a bicultural Taiwanese-American and Brazilian immigrant living far away from where we grew up, it can sometimes feel like we are in a near-constant state of saudades, a Portugese word meaning “a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing.” Food helps us stay in touch with the cultures so near and dear to, acting as an essential connection to what we left behind.
Because food has such a special meaning for both of us (and because we love to eat, of course), we’ve increasingly found ourselves planning our travels around food. Not only do we seek out new flavor combinations, cooking methods, and culinary rituals, we aim to learn more about the feeling that food evokes.
As a cross-cultural couple, we spend a lot of time thinking about our Brazilian, Asian, and American cultural heritage and how they impact our relationship and worldview. We plan to share these insights with you here as well.
Welcome! We hope you enjoy what you find here.
